The worship of Apollo Lairbenos
Lot 1261
PHRYGIA. Hierapolis. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Tetrassarion (Orichalcum, 27 mm, 11.86 g, 12 h), time of the Antonines, 138-192. ΛAIPBHNOC Radiate and draped bust of Apollo Lairbenos to right. Rev. ΙЄΡΑΠΟΛЄΙΤΩΝ Selene, with crescent on shoulders, driving biga to right, holding torch in each hand. RPC IV.2 online 9991. Very rare and unusually attractive, the finest known example. Slightly rough, otherwise, good very fine.

The temple of Apollo Lairbenos was located some 30 km northeast of Hierapolis on a ridge above the Maeander river. While the radiate crown points towards a solar deity, epigraphic evidence suggests that the god was especially concerned with punishing stealing, the breaking of oaths, and the mistreatment of children
